Take advantage of the new Google Sitemaps program
Google recently launched a new program called Google Sitemaps (https://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps). This program (free, currently still in Beta) is designed to help web site owners to get their web site pages get crawled by google.
If you want to take advantage of Google Sitemaps, you need to place a Sitemap-formatted file on your webserver. By doing so you enable Google's crawlers to find out what pages are present and which have recently changed, and to crawl your site accordingly. Google Sitemaps can help to get more of your web pages crawled and can also enable you to tell Google when contents on your site changes.
This sounds pretty good. However, the problem I see is that in order to get started, you have to install some scripts on your sever. Webmasters "should have knowledge of uploading files to their webserver, connecting to their webserver, and running scripts. In addition, Python version 2.2 must be installed on your webserver - check with your web hosting company if you are unsure". Bottom line: you have to be a technical guy or have a technical guy to help you in order to take advantage of Google Sitemaps. To make people's life easier, Google also says "If any of these requirements are not met, you can still submit a Sitemap to the Google Sitemaps program in simple text format.".

Sitemaps 101 - Back To SEO School
Sitemaps are without doubt one of the most often ignored and undervalued aspects of search engine optimization. You've probably spent a huge amount of time working on pages of original content, keyword density and getting incoming links but never once spared a thought for a sitemap for your new creation.
What is a sitemap? Put simply it's a page or pages that contain a list of and link to all the other documents on your site. This is useful on two levels:
1. Your visitor can quickly reference all the documents on your site to find exactly what they're looking for.
2. Search engine spiders can also quickly find and index every single page of your site in the least amount of time. The SEO benefits of using a sitemap far considerable and should not be ignored.
This is a win-win situation for you, your web site visitors and the search engines. Put simply you're nuts if you've not included a sitemap as part of your overall web site promotion strategy.
The good news is that it's never too late to start. You can create a sitemap page today but there are some rules to creating an effective sitemap that you need to follow:
Your sitemap must only be linked to from your homepage and no other page. Why? You want the search engine spiders to find this link directly from your homepage and follow it from there. Your sitemap MUST NOT be linked to from every other page of your site. Also from a Google Pagerank point of view only linking to your sitemap from your homepage can also "funnel" PR quickly to pages all over your site.
If you have a large web site of 50 pages or more limit the number of pages listed on your sitemap to a maximum of 30. This is to prevent your sitemap from being misinterpreted as a link farm by the search engines. It also makes the sitemap a lot easier for real human visitors to read through. Limiting the number of pages listed on each sitemap to 30 might mean splitting your sitemap over 5, 10 or 20 pages. This has to be done and the long term benefits are worth it. Bear in mind that if you do create a 20 page sitemap you've just created an extra 20 pages of content for your web site!
Make absolutely sure that each of your sitemap pages links to the next. If you have 10 sitemap pages in total then each of those needs to link to every other sitemap page. Otherwise both visitors and search engine spiders will find a broken link, lose interest and go away.
Test your sitemap thoroughly. Make sure all the links works. Make sure it's easy to read and navigate through. Your sitemap is there to assist your visitor and not confuse them.
How should you structure your sitemap? The following tips must be adhered to in order for your site to gain the maximum possible benefit from having a sitemap.
1. The title of each sitemap link should be keyword rich and link directly back to the original page.
2. Include 10 - 20 words of text from the original page of content underneath the relevant sitemap link. This creates more content for search engine spiders and human visitors can see exactly what each page is about in advance of clicking. uman visitor benefit is that they can see what the pages is about in advance.
3. Ensure that the look and feel of your sitemap page is consistent with the rest of your site. Use the same basic HTML template you used for every other page of your site.
So now you understand the importance of building a sitemap for your web site. There is work involved but the long term benefits for your web sites far outweigh any effort you have to make right now.

Sitemaps and hypertext links are "food" for search engine robots. We will look at the value of text links for optimal spidering, and the importance of using a sitemap in order to help search engine robots reach your web site's deeper pages.
Hypertext Links Search engine robots are not terribly sophisticated. They cannot click a button, submit a form, pull down a menu, or perform any other type of online "user interaction" that might be used by a human visitor. Robots are able to index the text on a page and click through hypertext links. For this reason, adding navigational text links to your web pages (often located at the bottom of the page) provides the search engine robots with another means to click through the links of your web pages when it cannot access these other types of navigation.
Sitemaps A sitemap page is a supercharged version of the bottom-of-the-page hypertext links. The sitemap provides "food" for a hungry search engine robot. A sitemap page will at very least have links to all of the major pages on your site. Depending on the size of your site, it may actually link to all of your pages. This means that once the robot gets to the sitemap page, it can visit every page on your entire site. Having all of the content of your site included in the search engine database is a good thing: you are much more likely to come-up in the search engine results when somebody is performing a search related to your topic.
A good sitemap will:
Provide text links to at least the most important pages on your site; depending on the size of the site, it may have links to every page
Give a short explanation of each page on your site, to inform your visitors about your web site
Give your visitors the information they need when lost in your web site, and show them how to reach the page they are looking for
Provide a pathway for the search engine robots to follow in order to reach your most important pages
Provide important keyword phrases in the sitemap text and hypertext links that help the automated search engine robot "understand" what the page is about
Help search engine robots find static landing pages that then link to dynamically generated pages they may not otherwise find
Even if your web site is small, add a sitemap for your visitors and for the search engine robots.
To make your sitemap most attractive to the search engine robots and your human visitors, be sure to include descriptive text along with the page URLs and links. Use your keywords in that text, including appropriate content for each of the pages to which you link. Be careful not to overuse your keyword phrases, though, or you may be penalized in the rankings. Remember that this is a map that will be used by both search engine robots and your human visitors. If the content of the page makes sense to the people who visit your site, chances are it will make sense to the visiting robots as well.
When you make it easy for your visitors to navigate your site, they will find what they are looking for. When you make it easy to search engine robots to move around on your site, you increase your chances of being favorably listed in their search results.
