Anti-Spam Two Step for Webmasters

If your email address is on a website that's been online for a while you're being blasted with unsolicited email (SPAM). You can delete it or you can eliminate much of it in two simple steps.

Step 1: Scramble Your Email Address

It isn't human visitors to your site that are causing the problem. It's website spidering SPAMBOTS. These spambots go out on the web and harvest any email address they can find. These harvested email addresses are then sold by unscrupulous *spam pushers*.

Your goal is to hide your email address from the spambots, but still display it for your website visitors to see. If the spambot doesn't recogize your scrambled code as an email address it won't harvest it.

Search the web for scripts that will scramble your email address. You will find many free scripts and some that you can purchase. Some are simple and easy to install. Others can be a little more complicated.

The one that I like is called EScrambler. It is a free script developed by InnerPeace.org. You can visit their site and copy the source code (permission given on the site). Or, go to http://www.webdesignwisdom.com/escrambler.shtml.

This simple script generates a javascript that scrambles your email address. Just copy the script and paste it in your HTML instead of the normal mailto:me@mydomain.com. Your email address is displayed properly for visitors to see, and the HTML looks like anything but an email address.

An example of *me@mydomain.com* in escrambled form:

<!--EScrambled Email Address Code-->

<script>

<!--

function escramble(){ var a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i a='' a+='lto:' b+='@' e='' f='' b+='mydomain.com' g='<img src="' h='' i='" alt="Email us." border="0">'

if (f) d=f else if (h) d=g+h+i else d=b

document.write(a+b+c+d+e) }

escramble()

//-->

</script>

<!--End EScrambled Email Address Code-->

Step 2: Send Spam to Your Auto-Delete Account

Now, just because you've scrambled your email address, that doesn't keep all spammers from sending email to you. Some will just use something like *anything*@yourdomain.com because they understand that most websites have email forwarding. Anything that is emailed to your domain will be forwarded to an email address you specified.

You never have to see this email if you forward it to another email address that automatically deletes it.

You will need a free email account that offers some simple anti-spam features to use as your *dump account*.

You must be able to designate email addresses from which you will not accept any email. You may already have an account that can handle it. If not, look into Mail.com or Lycos.com.

Then make your free email dump account the default forwarding address in your website's email handler. Go to your free email account and set it to reject all mail received from YOUR domain.

Then have email that is sent to your published email addresses (those you have scrambled on your site) forwarded to your normal forwarding address. Or, set them up as individual POP accounts if your hosting service offers this feature.

Now you will receive email from your website visitors who actually read your email address on your website and all other email will be deleted.

This is a very effective way to get rid of most spam that is generated from your domain. It won't eliminate all of it. The volume of spam that I was receiving decreased by 90-95% after I made these changes.

This tactic will work for sites that have been online with an unprotected email address too. Change the email address on your site to a different scrambled address. Forward all email that is sent to your old posted address to your dump account.

If you've been using your primary email address on your site, you'll need to notify everyone that your email address has changed. This makes it more difficult, but worth the effort if you're being slammed with spam.

12 Quick Tips For Beginning Webmasters

Starting off on the right foot with any new business is not just important, it's imperative. This is especially true on the Internet, where first impressions are made in a matter of seconds, and can make or break the potential for success.

A sales focused website functions simply as a retail cyber-store. With that in mind, it's just as important that visitors be welcomed and feel comfortable while browsing a website, as they would be made to feel in a shop on Main Street.

Here are a few quick tips that will help to gain your cyber-visitor's interest, and keep her browsing for awhile.

1. Capture the visitors attention immediately with a bold headline or a thought provoking question. You have about 10 seconds to convince a first time visitor that it might be worth her time to browse your site further.

2. Keep slow loading graphics, animations, and flash presentations to a minimum. Most visitors will not wait long before clicking off to another site.

3. Avoid loud or overbearing color schemes. What may look great on your living room walls might be difficult to view and read on-screen. Background colors should be pale or white, with dark or black font for maximum readability.

4. Compose your primary message to focus on the visitor's interests, needs and desires, and how you and your site can fulfill those. Few people will be interested in your accomplishments or how great you think your business is. Save that for the 'about us' page.

5. Inject a conversational style into the message that your website conveys, avoiding dry corporate syntax or technical jargon. A site that portrays a personality and casual human element will be much more attractive to repeat visitors.

6. Proofread carefully for spelling, punctuation, and grammar. This is imperative to presenting a professional image of you and your business. It is recommended that the proofreading be done by someone other than yourself, and who has not previously read the script.

You may wish to contact the English department at a nearby high school or college, and arrange to have an upper level student perform this task for you. It's that important!

7. Keep your page design clean and free of clutter. A site that visually assaults the visitor will be clicked off quickly. White space and clearly defined sections will make for easier navigation.

8. For a large site, break the content into sections and create seperate pages accordingly. Many Internet users do not like to scroll down indeterminately on overly long pages. Manage your page length to three screens maximum.

9. Test your pages with multiple browsers to be sure they work as they should. What works in one browser may not work with another. The two most commonly used browsers as of this writing are MS Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.

10. Invest wisely in registering your own domain name and acquiring professional quality webhosting. To rely, even at first, on sub-domains or free hosting services will seriously harm your business credibility. In addition, avoid using any free email account as a business contact.

11. Provide a incentive and a method for visitors to join your mailing list, and display it prominently on each page. This is not an option. It's a necessity to your ongoing success.

12. Openly display your full name, your physical address, and at least two contact methods (ie. email and telephone) on your site. This will cultivate visitor trust, and add to your credibility as an honest and above-board business owner.

The Biggest Mistake Most Webmasters Make.

Internet Marketing Web Site Promotion  Webmaster Mistake Number One

The number one difference between people making money on the net from those who do not is webmaster mistake number one.

Those people who do not make any money online spend too much time and effort doing totally low-yield or no-yield activities while wishing and hoping for better results.   The internet allows you to know within days, at worst, just a very few weeks, that an activity will or will not produce a specific result.

After a reasonable trial period doing whatever you have elected to do, you can surmise that maybe your headers aren't strong enough. Maybe. You can play with these for a while. But, only for a while.

However, still, within just a few days, of playing and tweaking, the result or non-result will be clear.

Continuing to do that activity, however good you get at doing it, even if you automate it, if it doesn't produce the Results you need to earn a living from that source, stop doing it.  It will not get any better.   If the systems you use within your traffic generating processes are low yield, you may try improving your systems to better software.

However, before you do, there still has to be a current yield of some measurable, definable, positive result from the current software.

Remember: one hundred percent improvement on nothing is still nothing. ... and, worse if you spent money on software.    Using an all-too-common example, if your efforts over, say, a three months period have generated $100 total income and you need $100 of income per day, you know simply that your success rate on the volume you are generating is just 1%.

In other words, you need 100 times your current daily volume to achieve what you need.

If you have been doing what you are currently doing over that three months or more, clearly something has to change dramatically for the better.   The one really positive, overriding consideration between where you are as a mathematical factor of where you have to be to achieve your dream goals is this: whatever that factor is, it's completely achievable.

If you are at 1% of your goals needing one hundred times growth, or at 10% needing ten times growth, the right tools and resources exist to do it. The operative word there is 'right'.

When it finally sinks in and you fully understand that equation and that it is entirely doable and within your reach and your control, then your success path will become clearer.

When you open up your computer each and every day to go online and seek an income, ask yourself this one simple question: How many new people can I reach today?

Same old same old and no appreciable results is not a viable answer.   As an example, when we go online each and every day, we begin with our stats for all our sites and those under our care and analyze the heck out of them.   Then, we ask ourselves one overriding question for each site: what can we offer today to at least one million new people to generate a bare minimum of 10 new sales before the end of the day for each of our websites?

Now, we didn't get there overnight.

However, we did know this, doing the same thing for too long and generating non-existent or insufficient income was not going to pay our bills.

Unfortunately, that's where most people stick or quit. And, there's no need. You can do it .  Keeping this article short. * Look closely at what you're doing and how long you've been doing it relative to your results.

If it's low-yield / no-yield, stop doing it. It will not get any better.

* Ask yourself, each and every day, How many new people can I reach today?

Exactly as in real life, a massive number of people have to be aware of your business for you to generate sufficient foot traffic through your store to make enough sales at least to earn a decent living.

So too, must you be able to reach enough people online daily to generate enough foot traffic through your site.   How many new people you need to reach will be answered by whatever factor between what you have achieved to date and where you need to be to achieve the results you want. It's totally doable whatever the factor.

Once you learn to ask and answer that question honestly and with purpose each and every day as a daily habit, you will begin to see the bigger picture... how to make a very good living online.

All Success is a Shared Activity  John W David

P/S, while this is a front-ending web sales strategy, it pays the bills. For most webmasters, this is an essential first step. Back-ending, up-sells, peripherals as separate strategies can come later.   It's easier to have a longer term strategy when you're not immersed in daily tactics of trying to produce immediate results... as in trying to pay your bills.

Most webmasters are stuck in the daily tactical effort of trying to get from 'start' to that significant 'first step' in the right direction and ultimate profitability and a whole new lifestyle.
