To Link or Not to Link? -- Webmasters and their silly ideas about reciprocal linking
Every webmaster and SEO manager in the world invented Google....................oh wait, no they didn't! But they sure would have you think they did!
I wonder why it is that every SEO person on the face of Planet Earth seems to have completely differing ideas of how Google works. It all comes down to the pages on Google's website that are titled things like, "How Google Works," and inept webmasters' failure to actually read and understand these pages. But I know, you're thinking that SEO is all about figuring out the tricks and patterns that Google doesn't want to tell you outright. Well until you wheel Stephen Hawking over to the computer in your basement where you run your site and have him try to figure out Google's algorithm, you probably will never know it (especially since it's ever-changing).
But getting to the point: Reciprocal linking is one of the most popular and (probably) effective ways to increase your PageRank. And although I have questions whether or not your PageRank actually means anything, that's another article for another day. The idea is that the more sites on the web that point to your site, the more important your site must be. And many (including myself) think that a site with a high PageRank is considered "important," so your site is considered important, to some degree, when that site links to yours. Some also would say (I'm still on the fence with this one) that having external links on your site in some way "hurts" your PageRank or search engine placement results. I'm not sure about this one, but I make sure to keep only a few external links on any given page. You can bet that Google doesn't give a crap about your one link page that has eight-hundred and fifty thousand links to every poker and penis-drug website in cyberspace.
But what really confuses and amazes me is how the simplest, widely known facts can be so misunderstood by so many webmasters. A webmaster who can take the time to learn html inside and out, and perhaps programming and database management as well, but he can't seem to grasp some very basic knowledge about search engines. The most frequent unnecessary issue that I encounter when managing my reciprocal linking campaign is webmasters who deny my request to exchange links for the reason that my page or site isn't indexed by Google yet, so they are not interested. Let me explain something: If you type in your URL into Google search, and your site is displayed in the results.......Google has indexed your site!!! I hope as you read that you think to yourself "Well duh." But sadly that is a concept which is completely unfathomable by a LOT of site managers. And trying to explain it to them is like pulling teeth. I have sent them URL's to the search results page where Google lists my site, they don't understand. I send them a .jpg screenshot of Google's results page where my site is listed, and they argue that it still doesn't mean I'm indexed. I think it may come down to the fact that many SEO managers and webmasters either do not know what it means to be indexed, or they don't know the difference between being indexed and having a PageRank. Indeed, if you have a PageRank of any sort, you almost certainly are going to be indexed. But if you are indexed, you may not have any sort of PageRank.
Once this is learned by webmasters far and wide, my job will become a lot easier. If you are one of these inept webmasters, please go to Google and read their "For Webmasters" sections.

Are Webmasters Chasing Rainbows?
It is a fact that in most cases, approximately 70 percent of visitors to a given site comes from search engines. Webmasters very well know that the more visitors there is to a site, an e-commerce site will potentially generate more sales.
As a result, many webmasters make search engine optomization their number one priority in developing a website. However, these webmasters does not exactly know the algorhythms that every search engine follow (except for the engineers of these search engines). In fact, most webmasters simply presume possible rules which influence their strategies.
As of this writing, the three major search engines are Yahoo, Google, and MSN. Yet each of them have their own algorhythms that are never announced to the public. Why? Simply because the search engine owners and engineers does not want the search results to be manipulated or dominated by certain websites or webmasters.
It is sad to say that every search engine make frequent changes to their algorhythms. As a result, a website which may be on the first page of a search result for a particular keyword, may be lost or buried among the millions of other listings when changes are imposed.
As a result, such website may experience a decreased number of visitors. Loss or diminished number of visitors would result to poor sales. Poor sales result to damaged business. Damaged business creates frustration to the webmasters and website owners.
On the positive side, however, other websites may benefit from the sudden changes of a search engine algorhythm. These changes in turn would mean more exposure of the site, more visitors, more sales, and joy to the webmasters and website owners concerned. However, the next question would be - How long will these last?
Should webmasters rely only on search engine optomization? Should webmasters keep on chasing rainbows? Should they keep on pleasing the search engines only? Should we put all eggs in one basket only? The best advice then is to apply other ways to bring in visitors to a site.
Successful websites apply not just search engine optomization, but also other sound strategic techniques to bring success.
How Non-technical Webmasters Are Harnessing the Power of RSS...
The opportunity to quickly and easily implement and harness the power of RSS is quite real and new programs become available every week that allow non-technical marketers and webmasters to capitalize on the effective use of RSS.
Jim Edwards spoke of this trend in the recent "For a Greater Cause" teleseminar. Media-rich blogs and content sites are stickier and keep visitors on site longer.
Consider delivering audio content via the internet by setting up a weblog and incorporating streaming audio. By doing so, your media-rich message creates a relationship with visitors that cannot be achieved with text alone.
If you'd like to take this one step further, start using video content. It's the difference between reading a flyer versus listening to the radio versus watching television. Why do people gravitate to the TV when every home has a radio? When presented with the option, we prefer the satisfaction of both the auditory and visual senses.
The real power of blogs, audio and video is that you can invite your visitors to participate and interact with you by allowing them to post comments. Your weblog becomes a community event and we all love a party.
If you'll be using the strategy of blogging with audio and video, there are three things that you should do.
First, as mentioned above, allow your visitors to post comments to your weblog .
Second, always give visitors the opportunity to sign up for your newsletter or ezine directly from your weblog .
Third, for those who prefer to receive news via RSS feeds, post your RSS feed on every page of your weblog .
Recorded interviews with industry experts fed via podcast can raise your credibility simply by association. Arrange for a phone interview with an expert in your market area, get permission to record the call and post it to your weblog . If you're offering publicity and exposure for the interviewee, it should be simple to find willing and eager parties.
