How Free Content Can Be Detrimental To Your Websites Health!

Some webmasters try to use articles from free content directories to get visitors to their site and make some money. This is mostly important for those who have just begun working as an affiliate for several companies and do not yet have any funding, yet need to build small niche web sites to get visitors to their site so that they can begin making revenue.

Although this can sometimes be the only option for those who are running on a non-existent budget, it is not a way that will effectively build your web site or revenue. Here are a few potential reasons why this may be detrimental to your business building efforts.

Problem #1 - Search Engines

Search engines look down upon your site if it has the exact same duplicated content as other sites. The more sites that share your content, the less it will help you achieve good search engine rankings.

Good search engine rankings are essential in getting visitors to your web site so that they have a chance to click on your affiliate links. If you cannot get visitors, then you will never make any revenue. Working on the search engine optimization of your site so that you will eventually be high enough in the results to get customers, should be priority one.

Problem #2 - Getting visitors to click

Although getting your web site high on search engine result pages and acquiring site visitors is hard work, unfortunately this is only half of the battle. You must also be able to convince those visitors to click on your affiliate links. If your visitors see the same content they have seen on a multitude of other sites, they will be less likely to click on your links. This is because people want to buy things that are recommended by someone that they trust or who they feel are an expert on the subject.

If your content is just duplicated from other sites, you will be exposed as someone who does not really know what they are talking about and therefore others will not look as favourable at your product recommendations. This will reduce the number of web site visitors who will be willing to click through.

Problem #3 - Author Bylines

Most free content is only given to you if you agree to place the authors byline under the article (you can get into trouble if you try to use it without following the stipulated rules). This poses a problem because most author bylines include links. When a reader gets done reading a really intriguing article, there is a strong possibility that they will click on the authors byline link rather than your affiliate links. This is the entire reason why these authors offer free content to begin with, so that they may get their name and links out there to the public. Using this type of content may mean shooting yourself in the foot and losing possible profitable web site visitors.

Once you put these three problems together, you are looking at a serious decline in revenue simply because you used free web site content from article directories. Although it may be the only option for some, if you have the funds to buy your own original content, then you should go this route. If you don't have the funds, you may be better off writing your own content and then hiring professional services once you have made a profit to work with.

If Content Is The Emperor, Then RSS Is The Emperor's New Tailor

Content is king, in more ways than one. As we all know, information is what fuels the internal workings of the internet. People log online to search for information. If you have the information they need, they'll be seeking you out. And where will this information be contained? In your web site's content, of course!

Search engines make content valuable as well - regularly updated content, that is. Every time you change your source code to provide updated content, the search engine spiders are informed and they will crawl through your pages the next time a relevant query is made. Hence, a regularly updated web site is said to place higher in search engine results, and as such, garners more visitors than its less updated competitors.

But creating content is a menial, time-consuming process as it is, what more when you have to update and continuously provide new content at every turn? Chances are, your online endeavors would be tantamount to a fulltime job, and perhaps even more demanding than such.

You must be asking if there is a shortcut to the process, right? At least something that would make content generation a little easier.

The answer is no. There is no shortcut to creating content. You will have to provide excellent, unique content as anchors to your web site if you wish to achieve sustainable success with your web pages.

But when it comes to updatable content, well, there is this thing we call RSS, or Real Simple Syndication.

Feed on Feeds - A Free PHP/MySQL based server-side RSS and Atom aggregator

RSS, basically, is a syndication method that allows you to display content on your web pages, such content emanating from other sources on the internet.

For example, I am a weblog owner. You could opt to subscribe to my RSS feeds and display my content on your web pages via an RSS aggregator. The result? You'd have fresh, new content every time I update my weblog .

But your RSS feeds don't have to come from my weblog alone. You could subscribe to RSS feeds from newswires, article directories and the likes. Furthermore, you could narrow down the parameters of the RSS feeds that your RSS aggregator would fetch. Want to have content about dogs, and dogs only? Synch your RSS aggregator to fetch feeds that contain your chosen keywords.

There are some things, however, that you should keep in mind whenever you'd want to include RSS in your content pages. Take a look at them.

* To avoid duplicate content, make sure that the RSS feeds will only supplement original content in your web site. A page exclusively devoted to RSS feeds may be filtered out as duplicate content.

* Make sure that your RSS aggregator will convert RSS feeds into HTML files, and not java scripts. Search engine spiders won't be able to read java scripts.

* Make sure that you subscribe to relevant RSS feeds. You need to keep the focus of your web pages to attract the contextually relevant ads that you want, if ever you're engaged in PPC programs.

RSS technology is growing by leaps and bounds. Some experts even say that by 2010, RSS would have replaced email as the standard for message conveyance on the internet. Some marketers use RSS as their follow-up system of choice. Some marketers even use RSS, mainly RSS 2.0 technology, to stream their podcasts and videocasts to millions of people, simultaneously, to expose their business to a wide, wide audience.

Indeed, we are lucky to be living in the age of RSS. RSS makes online business a little more manageable and a lot more effective, and it would be prudent to embrace all that this technology could offer.
