Google's Duplicate Internet Content Filter in Action

If you don't believe Google's Duplicate Content Filter exists, I have Dramatic Proof their Internet content filter exists and it's very effective by removing 99.73% of all duplicate content from its index.

On July 5, 2005 I published an article entitled "7 Top Ways to Avoid Link Theft" which was picked up and included as content on other web sites.

Before the article was released I checked on Google whether any results already existed for the exact phrase "7 Top Ways to Avoid Link Theft" and there were no listings for that term.

Over the next few weeks I monitored through a search query on Google how many results appeared in Google for the title of my article. One week after publication there were 6,760 results listed in Google, a week later it was 14,100 and it reached a peak of 17,000 results by July 26, 2005. 4 weeks after publication the results in Google had fallen slightly to 16,600.

Almost 6 weeks after publication the results listed in Google had fallen to 44.

In a matter of less than two weeks the number of search results on Google.com for the title of my article had gone from 16,600 to just 44.

In case you're thinking this is because all these other web sites dropped by article and replaced it with other content I should add that a search on Yahoo.com on the same day still showed 14,300 results for my article.

What's more of these 44 results on Google, more than half consist of listings from the same web sites. In other words some sites have the same article duplicated on different pages on their web site.

So Google's Internet Content Filter is not used to remove duplicate listings from the preferred web sites it chooses to keep in the search results.

On August 28th, 2005 8 weeks after first publication I distributed the article again to a new list of article sites to repeat the process. After 6 weeks the same article had reached a peak of 5,620 results on Google. Less than 2 weeks later the results had fallen to 217.

For me this was dramatic proof that Google's Duplicate Internet Content Filter is active and very effective. If you're wondering if other major search engines have a duplicate content filter I can confirm that Yahoo certainly does. The same article which was once listed on 14,300 sites on Yahoo, has fallen to 344 over the same time period.

From these results it would seem Google takes about 6 to 8 weeks to remove duplicate content using its Duplicate Internet Content Filter.

But the question remaining is just how does Google decide which out of over 16,000 results does it keep and which does it reject ?

I have witnessed situations where my own articles appear in results on other web sites, but are not listed in the results for my own web site.

So clearly Google does not take into account who the originator and author of the original article was when deciding which sites will remain in its search results.

It also seems to have nothing to do with where Google first finds the article.

Some articles I have published to my web site for several weeks before releasing them for distribution to other web sites.

In that time the Google spiders have visited my site several times and Google has had enough time to work out that the article was first found on my site.

It would be interesting to see if it's possible to work out what factors Google is using in its Internet Content Filter to decide which results to keep in its listing and which ones to remove. But that's for another article.

Article Marketing, Duplicate Content, biting yourself in the foot?

With the current massive growth of article marketing to drive traffic to web sites, establish credibility, and to create backlinks for search engine optimization purposes, there are constant queries and/or discussions related to duplicate content.

Various measures are thrown back and forth to combat this:-

~ Author Perspective ~

- Rotation of bio boxes - Rotation of paragraphs - Changing keywords - Changing Titles

~ Article Site Perspective ~

- Niche Categories - Splitting articles into parts on seperate pages - Splitting articles into parts on the same page and intelligent use of tables or CSS - Including related article snippets on the same page

Article Directories can easily make every single article they publish appear unique to the search engines, without changing any of an authors original words. It is harder for weblog publishers, but it still can be achieved, and even automated to a certain extent.

~ Rotation Can Reduce your Article Distribution ~

One of the main reasons for publishing articles is to generate keyword focused backlinks with appropriate anchor text. You want your article picked up by as many sites as possible.

- Rotation of bio boxes does not affect distribution - Rotation of paragraphs does not affect distribution - Changing a few keywords in the article body may reduce or increase your distribution

But...

Changing the title of your articles can reduce distribution!

Lets go into this in more detail...

~ How articles are used for content sites ~

As well as writing about article publishing, my main business model is niche marketing. Creating niche focused web sites to provide relevant information for people searching on a particular topic.

In this article I don't want to focus on what makes a good or bad niche web site.

When creating niche web sites, it is cost/time efficient to use various forms of automated or semi-automated tools to collect content to display that is relevant to your audience.

With articles and RSS feeds of articles, the primary way to determine whether content is unique is by way of title and author. If they are unique, it is likely that the content is unique.

It is prevalent to source your content from multiple locations, so you would collect articles, either manually or automatically from multiple locations. With RSS feeds you would subscribe to multiple RSS feeds.

If you are using good tools, duplicate content is excluded. You wouldn't want to post 10 different versions of the same article on your web site.

~ Rotating Titles Defeats the Duplicate Checking ~

Yesterday I was collecting articles based on Search Engine Optimization for one of my sites. Using one of my semi-automatic tools, I gathered together over 950 supposedly unique articles from multiple sources.

These I intend to publish, 3 - 4 articles per day, over the next 8 months.

But I hit a problem.

When I sorted the articles by keyword density, I noticed that there were a fair number of articles, published by the same authors, that had different titles. Sometimes it was just the insertion of a number, at other times just a change of a single keyword.

Duplicate content!

With 950 articles to prepare, I wasn't going to go through them one by one comparing if it actually was duplicate content or not. I took the simple option. For each author I noticed articles that were the same keyword density, and similar length, I JUST DELETED ALL THE ARTICLES. The author will not get published on my site. For many of them that was 10 articles.

I ended up with a total of approximately 800 articles suitable for publishing, and some authors would not be included.

It cost me more than 1 hour additional time to sort through and remove the duplicates. I could probably buy that many private label rights articles with no worry about duplicates in the collection, for the same expense comparing time to $ cost. But then there would be no backlinks for the authors, and I could target the articles exactly as I want with full rights to modify them.

~ Growing Trend ~

The idea of rotating article titles is not currently widespread. I have noticed it on occasion in the past where it was obviously done for tracking purposes, just an insertion of a number, and it was easy to remove the duplicates.

If however the trend continues, it will become more difficult to identify individual unique articles, especially for RSS feeds.

~ Think about it ~

It is already almost as cost effective to buy articles with rights as use articles from article directories.

Do you want backlinks from your articles?

~ Spreading the backlinks ~

I currently like sourcing articles from multiple locations. Many smaller article directories who have intelligently included a link to their site at the bottom of article content gain a great deal of exposure from content sites redistributing their articles. The backlinks are invaluable. However, if these sites start to contain duplicate articles with different titles, I will simply be forced to collect articles from the largest article directories. So much for diversification... lets all encourage monopolies!

The same would be especially true for RSS feeds.

~ Automated Submission ~

Technology is now helping authors distribute their articles across the internet. The market for such tools is highly competitive, thus there is a race to implement improved features. One such feature now being implemented is the rotation of article titles. This is intended to help an author make every article published to article directories unique.

Whilst I commend the authors for their ingenuity in finding solutions, I am deeply concerned that this will initially reduce the use of articles submitted, and eventually discourage content site creators from sourcing articles from multiple locations, and opting to source only from the largest directories.

~ Think About Time ~

Writing 20 unique titles for articles will probably take as much time as writing a whole new article. Two articles in my opinion are certainly better to promote your business, both short term and long term, than one article with 20 different titles.

When it comes to monitoring the success of your article publishing efforts, one of the favorite techniques is to search for your article title, thus discovering which sites used your article, and allowing you to also determine how many of those same sites also include a backlink to your web site.

~ Advice to Authors ~

Based on my experience both as an author and a creator of niche focused content sites, think very carefully before leaping on the bandwagon of the newest trend in article publishing. If you rotate your article titles, you are making life harder for content publishers, and your efforts might well backfire.

You've Got to Have Content!

Ezine publishing is an essential element of your online business. Ezines allow you to keep in touch with your prospective customers and to build a relationship of trust and respect with your readers. Building this relationship is very important to your business and your reputation. One way to accomplish this relationship is by producing a quality ezine with quality content.

By quality content I mean resources, information and other helpful items. Do not make your ezine one big sales letter or ad for your products. You, of course, want to promote your products in your ezine, but don't overdo.

When I first started on the Internet, I was looking for links and ezines that would provide resources to help me promote and build my online business. I also needed to learn step by step what Internet marketing was about. Good ezines can be a goldmine for this kind of information. I have seen some ezines that were nothing but a list of ads and I have also seen some ezines that contained a treasure chest of useful information. You definitely want your ezine to fall into that second category. There are many ways of doing just that.

*Informative Articles: Make sure you include an article or two that provide some practical and useful information and maybe some resource links to back up that information. A good article should be like a mini tutorial. You should actually learn something from it. There are many places on the web where you can get good articles.

*Original Material: Along with other quality articles, you should write some of your own material. If you feel you can't write whole articles, write tips, or updates on what is happening on the Net. Write an editorial on subjects that apply to your ezine content. You want to add some of you onto your ezine. This will help strengthen the relationship between reader and publisher.

*Helpful Resource Links: Inform your readers of sites that would help them in promoting their business, web design, marketing or other avenues of building their business. You can get these links by searching the web, hearing about them from friends or associates, or reading about them in other ezines. Visit these sites to see if they are the kind of site you want to recommend. Write up a short review to go along with the link. Let your readers know how this site can help them.

*Quality Products: If you sell or know of some good products that have helped you or someone you know with their business, inform your readers. Tell them why the product would help them with their business and provide a link for them to find out more.

*Freebies: Everybody loves Freebies!! Tell your readers about Freebies of all kinds. They do not have to pertain to business. Things like Free Ebooks, Free Services, Free Contests, Free Tutorials.....the list goes on and on. Here are some places to find freebies:

This is just a sample. There are thousands of sites that offer something for free. Do a search in your favorite search engine and see all the great links you can find.

*Interaction: You could have a Reader's Comments section so your readers can give their opinions, share their ideas and stories, ask questions, and make suggestions. This also helps strengthen the reader-publisher relationship.

Web Content (Mass + Keywords) + Links = SEO

Of course, the whole goal of the search engines' ranking schemes is precisely to deliver good, relevant content to users. The mechanism for how search engines select and reward good, relevant content is essentially just a technical issue, though admittedly an extremely important technical issue.

But even in purely technical, mechanistic, terms, web content affects search engine rankings three ways:

1. inbound links

2. web site mass

3. keyword optimization

1. Web Content and Inbound Links

Inbound links are the number-one factor in getting search engine rankings. They also yield plenty of traffic on their own. The importance of links is what has led many people to say that content is no longer important. But those people forget that content really does play a big role in getting links in the first place:

* At the very least, good content will make potential link partners more comfortable with linking to your site. No one wants to link to a link farm, splog, junk site, or even just an unprofessional-looking site. * Lots of good content gives other webmasters (and particularly bloggers) a reason to link to your site spontaneously without being asked.

* You can allow other web sites to post your content in exchange for a link back to your site.

2. Web Content Mass

More web pages of content = more search engine traffic

Here's why:

1. Adding pages to your site is like putting out extra nets to catch surfers. 2. Search engines see bigger web sites as more prestigious and reliable. 3. The more content you have, the more reasons you give other webmasters, particularly bloggers, to link to your site spontaneously, without being asked.

3. Web Content Keyword Optimization

Keyword optimization used to be the most important step in SEO. Now it matters little in ranking for highly competitive keywords.

Still, keyword optimization can really help you get traffic from searches not on competitive keywords. While you may never rank number 1 for "finance," you may still show up tops for a search on "household finance rent federal tax deductions" if you have that phrase somewhere in your content. Such non-competitive searches make up a very large proportion of total web searches.

Web Content Keyword Optimization Checklist:

There are four legs to keyword optimization:

* Research/selection * Density * Prominence * Stemming/Variation

Keyword Research and Selection

You need to identify keywords searched on by your target audience. Use tools such as those offered by WordTracker and Yahoo Search Marketing (formerly Overture).

There are two big pitfalls to avoid:

* "Negative keywords" that look relevant but are not really searched on by your target market. For instance, "web site copy" is a synonym for "web site content," but most people searching on "web site copy" are looking for software that copies an entire web site to the hard drive for offline browsing.

* Impossibly competitive keywords that you have no realistic chance of ranking high for them. How do you know if a keyword is impossibly competitive? One rough measure is to look at the PageRank of the webpages currently ranking in the top three for that keyword. If the PageRank of those pages is much higher than the PageRank your site will likely have in the future, you will probably never outrank those pages.

A pay-per-click campaign with Google Adwords of Yahoo! Search Marketing will help you to find which keywords really are searched on by your target audience.

Keyword Density

Keywords appear in the content the right number of times for search engines to recognize the page as relevant, but not so often that it looks like keyword stuffing. The longer the content, the more times the keyword should appear.

Keyword Prominence

Keywords appear in just the right positions within your web pages for search engines to recognize them as relevant. The page title, headings, and first lines of the page are often considered the most prominent positions.

Keyword Stemming/Keyword Variation

* Using variations of the keyword will help ensure web pages appear relevant to the next generation of more sophisticated search engine algorithms.

* In the meantime, variations of popular keywords helps your site appear for the "non-standard" searches on variations of the keyword.

There are three main types of keyword variations:

* Word-stem variations. A stem of a word is its base. For instance, "optimize" is the stem of "optimized." Other stem variations of "optimize" include "optimizing," "optimizer," and "optimization." You can also shuffle the component words of multiple-word keywords. Variations of "web site content" would be "web site content," "web content," "content for web sites," and "site content").

* Synonyms (such as "web page content," "internet content," or "writing for the web" for "web site content").

* Related terms (such as "internet," "SEO" or "web page").

For many people, the SEO side of content feels like a moot point. You need content for your visitors even if no search engine spider ever notices. But every web site budget, both of money and time, is finite. If you're ever choosing whether to invest in another link to please search engines or another page of content to please your visitors, don't forget: search engines still like content, too.
