Add New Content Effortlessly to Your Website with RSS Feeds

RSS Feeds are the latest in cutting-edge tools for alert webmasters. Globally, consumers are gobbling up this latest trend. The convenience of being able to monitor all of their favorite feeds in one place carries tremendous appeal. Webmasters and marketers find RSS feeds equally as attractive. The instant widespread distribution of content updates becomes a breeze with RSS feeds. Many believe that in the near future, webmasters who don't utilize this optimal communication tool will be in the minority.

Joe banged the desk next to his keyboard, making his coffee tilt precariously. He was irate to say the least. For the past 15 minutes he'd been browsing web sites looking for that tidbit of information he needed to complete his presentation due in 25 minutes. His growls would have intimidated anyone less courageous than the typical mountain lion, but Joe was fed up. To make matters worse, he knew that he'd recently visited a site with the information. His inability to recall which of the thousand sites he'd perused in the last weeks had him boiling.

In the cubicle to the right sat Sally, "always-on-time Sally." How did she do it? It seemed that everything she looked for was at her fingertips and only a minute or two away. If he weren't so galled by his inability to find that one lit bit of info, he'd ask her. Of course her eyes would light up, she'd snap her fingers and say, "Oh I know where we can find that!" The thought irked him.

The secret to Sally's seemingly pristine organization skills...you guessed it - RSS feeds all posted to one page. She had her favorite news feed, her favorite blogs, the latest Internet marketing and computer tech feeds, and even Garfield - her favorite cartoon - all posted to one page. When it came time to look for a tidbit of information, Sally knew right where to go. In fact the last time, she'd had to spend time using search engines was when her cat had fleas, and she wanted to find out which flea shampoo was most effective.

Designing for Content

We've all been told that a successful web site has great content. The problem that I've discovered is what do you do with and how to you organize all this great content? Below are some of the things that I've learned in the time I've had my own site. Now my particular situation is one where my site is constantly growing in content. I didn't start my site with all sorts of content at my finger tips. So the tips below are from that perspective.

1. Keep your content concise and simple. Of course make sure that there is enough there for your customers but don't write pages and pages of information. People are not going to sit there for an hour reading off of a computer screen, no matter how good the information is. 2. Keep your content relevant to your site. Do not start putting unrelated content on your site. It will be confusing and won't help you draw customers into your site. 3. Organize, organize, and oh yes organize. Keep everything organized. I don't know how many photography sites that I've been on have these huge lists of how to articles, hundreds of them which is great, but they are completely unorganized and I guess they expect you to scroll down through all these articles to find what you want. So organize your content. Make it easy to find things. Whether that's through a search option or carefully organized subheadings. Make it easy for people to get what they need quickly. 4. My site has grown steadily but more than I ever expected and that created a problem that I didn't foresee in the beginning. As you add content and I assume new pages be aware of where you place these pages in the grand scheme of your web design. Just don't add new pages to the bottom of list of links. As the web site grows the list of links to your other pages could be quite long so keep some sort of pattern of organization so that as you add pages it will seem to fit in with the rest. 5. Out of date information. With all this content we're all adding watch for out of date information. Remove content with information on technology that is not longer used. And cycle out old information that just isn't read or was not very popular.

These are just a few things that I've learned in designing for content on my site.

Website Content vs. your Search Engine Rankings

This is a one of the most important questions any webmaster should ask him or herself : which keywords, how much, and how to naturally include it in the site's content ? Many people refer to this plainly as keyword density. Getting back to basics - the search engines spiders web sites all over the internet. Many factors will give a site a certain rank on the search engines, including links pointing towards a site, title and description tags, but in the end, one of the most important factors is site content - Isn't this exactly why we search the internet in the first place ? We search for specific information, and relevant information is what we're hoping to get when searching a search engine. The better the content, the higher your web site's rankings should be.

It is therefore extremely important to look at your site's content - what, where, when and how ! The trick lies in giving content a natural flow, like when reading a book. Content having an unnatural sound to it will most certainly distract any reader of it. Keyword stuffing has become a huge problem as many searches end up in finding a web page with irrelevant information. Luckily the search engines have started to give attention to this factor, and are penalising web sites adopting this crude method. At the same time, for any web page to draw attention to it (search engines), it is very important that the page contain a fair quantity of keywords and keyword phrases related to the topic / theme of what the page is all about. It is not that easy, but spend some time on this and the search engines will most certainly reward you for your efforts !!

Your site will also become known for it's relevant high quality content, and more and more people will regularly visit it and also link to your web site. If in doubt, print out the page and ask a friend or relative to read it. They will surely be able comment on the natural sound of it or not.

RSS: A "Really Simple Solution" For Sending And Receiving Content

"RSS" stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS is a standard for publishing regular updates to web-based content. Using this standard, web publishers provide updates, such as the latest news headlines or weblog postings.

Consumers use RSS reader applications, or one of a growing number of online services to collect and monitor their favorite feeds in one place. RSS content from a publisher, viewed in one of these readers, is often called a "feed."

For consumers, RSS makes it possible to review a large number of sites in a short amount of time.

For publishers, RSS allows instant widespread distribution of content updates to consumers.

So, who publishes RSS feeds? Some of the biggest names on the Internet now offer content using RSS feeds:

* Yahoo!

* CNET

* BBC News Headlines

* ABC News

* Amazon.com

* Plus...many, many more!

In addition, thousands of weblog authors publish feeds to keep themselves better connected to their readers. Weblogs, also known as blogs, are a driving force behind a recent surge in interest for RSS and syndicated content. Many experts believe that in the very near future, the number of top-tier sites not syndicating any content will be in the minority.

If you're interested in collecting and browsing feeds, you have a multitude of choices. However there are two primary categories of feed reading applications: installable desktop programs and online services. There are also many desktop applications for Windows and Mac OS system users, but two of the most popular ones are FeedDemon (Windows) and NetNewsWire (Mac OS X).

Both require a small purchase price, but are at the head of the class for user-friendliness. They also come pre-loaded with dozens of feeds, so you can start exploring the syndication "universe" immediately. Free readers are also available. Just perform a search for "RSS Reader," using your favorite search engine.

If you would prefer to use an online service to track and manage your feeds, you have the advantage of being able to access your feed updates anywhere you use a web browser, and in some cases, on mobile equipment.

Also, any upgrades or new features are added automatically. There are, however, disadvantages to going mobile, such as different and fewer features, as well as slightly slower performance versus desktop systems. NewsGator.com, Bloglines.com, and MyFeedster.com are probably the three best-known examples of web-based feed reading services.

If you have a web site or weblog, you can add RSS syndication as a publishing option, in some cases automatically. How easily you can accomplish this depends entirely on how your site is served today.

For instance, if you are using a hosted publishing tool like Blogger.com, you may already be publishing a feed without even realizing it. Check to see whether your provider's administration tools offer feed-related options or controls. Other types of web sites and application platforms may require some programming skills in order to add RSS syndication capabilities.

In the world of web syndication, multiple versions of RSS and Atom are vying for widespread adoption. FeedBurner.com offers a feature called SmartFeed that makes sure feed readers receive the version they're most compatible with.

SmartFeed automatically handles the syndication format details so that you can focus your energy on creating content.

Make Your Link Exchanges Sticky Content for Visitors

There are a lot of webmasters who spend a substantial amount of time "working" their link exchange program. But very few who realize that a good link exchange program can not only increase your back links and your search engine visibility, it can also be used as a feature to attract and retain visitors. (And the visitors I am talking about are NOT just other webmasters who are looking to exchange links!)

It may take a little more work than you are currently investing in the links you put up on your site, but its well worth it. We have just begun creating a very dynamic link exchange program for Security Resources Inc., and within just a few weeks, not only has the entire links directory been spidered by Google, Yahoo, MSN and others, it is averaging 20 visitors a day. And over half of those visitors actually click through to the Security Resources online store.

I can almost hear you thinking, "20 visitors? Thats ALL? Big deal!" Ah but it is a big deal when you consider that the Security Resources Links Directory contains fewer than 100 links, (so far), and that 99% of these visitors are drawn to the site BECAUSE of the link directory, and that 95% of them are NOT other webmasters just looking for a place to exchange links. Add to that a whopping 26% of the visitors have added the Links Directory as a bookmarked favorite! If our results of a similar link exchange directory at Webs 4 Christ are an indicator, it would be safe to predict that the Security Resources Directory will be averaging well over 100 visitors a day within the next 30-60 days. How many of those will turn into buying customers? Perhaps only 1 percent - but that alone would be 30 additional sales per month!

What's the secret? There are three of them - target your links directory to your marketplace, organize your links directory and publicize it as you would your main web site.

First, target your links directory. It shouldn't be a free-for-all directory. There are plenty of those. In the case of Security Resources, their directory only contains categories and links to sites related to security. As the link directory grows, it will eventually become a very comprehensive directory of great value to anyone who is interested in security resources, web sites, publications, etc.

Second, organizing your links based on categories not only helps each outgoing link have more value, (because of less links per page), but it becomes a value add for visitors who are looking for links and information on your targeted topic because they can find what they are looking for. Take the time to alphabetize your links, and if you find yourself with over 100 links in a certain category, split the category.

Third, publicize your links directory. Have it as a sub-domain of your main site, or even have its own domain name. Submit it to as many web directories and search engines as you do for your main web site.

Dramatic results? No, not hardly, but content is king and if you make your links directory into a valuable component of your web site, with ever changing content, you will have a better chance of return visitors.
