Style over contentOne of the most common and mis-used phrases relating
to the Web is 'Content is king'. More often than not, the truth is
more like 'Content is lacking'. This is because Web developers' bosses
or clients tend to confuse a good-looking site with one that's useful.
It's a legacy from the days of print marketing, when ultra-glossy brochures
and catalogues were essential to promote a successful company image. The Massive Rewards Of Aggressively Self-Publishing Your Website ContentVery few people ever think of self-publishing their web site or weblog content. Yet behind this simple thought lies a secret that has opened the flood gates of traffic for many. I am not suggesting that you go out and publish a book (although this is even a better idea), what I am talking about here is online self-publishing. One of the wonderful things that the World Wide Web has done is turn millions of us into online self-publishers. You see by having a web site or weblog , whether you acknowledge it or not, you are already self-publishing. But it gets really powerful when a webmaster or weblog owner goes beyond their own site and self-publishes their content elsewhere, in other people's sites. It becomes even more interesting when they go even further in self-publishing and create an information product from their web content and offer it for sale online. Some smart webmasters are even doing both but using the former to help sell the latter. You see there is an increasing number of web sites that accept article submissions relevant to their subject of interest. Not to mention the dozens of high traffic article directories that will accept an article on virtually any subject of interest. The first thing that happens is that you instantly create valuable links back to your site (the rules of self-publishing free articles online are such that every article has a resource box with details on the source of the article including links). These links will do two things that are bound to have an enormous impact on your traffic. The first is that they will positively affect your search engine rankings. The second is that they will directly lead traffic to your site or weblog . By creating and promoting information products based on your site's contents, you will often find that you are generating even more interest in the free content on your site. Since what is already on your site is similar to what you are selling, many people will want to examine it before they purchase your product. Others will want to glean as much as possible from it so as to avoid purchasing your product. Are you getting an idea of the power there is in self-publishing your content? I have nothing Interesting Enough To Consider Self-Publishing Most folks don't believe that their content is interesting enough to self-publish. The truth is that if this were true, then chances are that your site does not deserve to exist. Besides, what the World Wide Web has done is to create markets for tiny niches covering imaginable subject you would care to think of. In other words, whatever it is you have to say, chances are that there is somebody out there who is eagerly seeking that information. As you aspire to attract as much traffic as possible to your site, self-publishing the content that you are using to do this becomes a breeze. Self-publishing Sharpens Your Focus By self-publishing your content at other web sites and by creating other information products, you sharpen your focus on creating captivating content that will attract traffic and keep as many folks as possible coming back again and again. In the increasingly crowded and competitive web, this can be a huge advantage. Self-publishing does this for you by forcing you to focus on the real value of your content and what your target market wants. Online Self-publishing Is The Future And the Future Is Already Here According to a recent article in BusinessWeek magazine, blogging is rapidly redefining media worldwide. If we take a moment to consider the role blogs have been playing in recent elections, most notably the 2004 US presidential elections, then it becomes clear that this is in fact an understatement. Blogs are at the forefront of online self-publishing and it is not surprising that they are a powerful online marketing tool these days, frequently used by many Fortune 500 companies in their marketing plans. The sooner you start looking into self-publishing your web site content the better for you and your self-publishing business. Countless webmasters have heard the stories about getting rich working from home on their web site. Yes, many people have done it. Yes, those who got in early on it did pretty well, but as I tell people fairly often, the ways to make money online are only limited to your imagination. The internet is the most free medium on the planet. Now, a web site which directly offers a service or product is a no-brainer. You promote that produce or service and sell it and you make money. However, if your web site is a nice library of content, but with no services or products to provide to the visitors, how can you make some money with it? There are ways and here are a few of them: * Traditional Banner Advertising * Form a subscription service * Host contextual ads * Sell affiliate products * Sell your own content Banner advertising is the most prevalent method of generating revenue from content sites. Content sites are valuable to internet advertisers. After all, what gives any content site value is the eyeballs looking at it. Its like an internet highway. In the real world, people will pay to put billboards on the side of well traveled highways. The same occurs online. Well trafficked web sites are valuable for advertising. If your content site does not have much traffic yet, then get busy promoting, because the traffic is what gives your site value. Without the traffic, your content is worth very little in the real world. There are many sources of getting advertising in your web site, and the easiest is to join a network. A few networks are Burst, Tribal Fusion, Rydium, FastClick, and Google Adwords. Each network has its own requirements for applicants. Offering a subscription service is another method of generating revenue. The trick here is to figure out what to offer. The best bet is to survey your public for what they need and want from your web site and what they are willing to pay for. If your content is updated routinely, you might be able to charge people a fee for accessing it. You might also offer enhanced services of some kind for subscribers. If you have an online forum, you could possibly offer access to private forums or other enhanced profile capabilities for a small fee. The trick on this is to offer something for free. It is the free content which will bring traffic to your web site, so finding the balance is something you will need to work out. Affiliate programs are something you can get into as well. In this case, you don't have to come up with the product yourself, yet you can bring attention to it and get visitors to purchase them from you. Find affiliate programs in which the products offered are relevant to your site. You want something that your public will be interested in. Amazon.com has a popular affiliate program in which you can offer books for sale on your web site for a commission. You can also go to the affiliate networks to search for programs. Some well known such networks are Linkshare, Commission Junction and Regnow. You can also come up with and offer your own products. This is where some imagination comes into play. One possible idea is to author and sell an e-book. You could sell white papers for your visitors to solve certain problems they may have. There are a number of things you can do, and it depends on the type of site you have. On the internet, though, your best bet is to sell your knowledge and expertise. It is a 100% profit margin (after your initial investment of time to put it together). The trick in any of these ideas is to survey your public and find out what they need and want. People love to express their opinions, and you should not be sitting there guessing at what people want and would spend their hard-earned money for. Ask them! How to prevent duplicate content with effective use of the robots.txt and robots <meta> tag.Duplicate content is one of the problems that we regularly come across as part of the search engine optimization services we offer. If the search engines determine your site contains similar content, this may result in penalties and even exclusion from the search engines. Fortunately it's a problem that is easily rectified. Your primary weapon of choice against duplicate content can be found within "The Robot Exclusion Protocol" which has now been adopted by all the major search engines. There are two ways to control how the search engine spiders index your site. 1. The Robot Exclusion File or "robots.txt" and 2. The Robots < Meta > Tag The Robots Exclusion File (Robots.txt) This is a simple text file that can be created in Notepad. Once created you must upload the file into the root directory of your web site e.g. www.yourweb site.com/robots.txt. Before a search engine spider indexes your web site they look for this file which tells them exactly how to index your site's content. The use of the robots.txt file is most suited to static html sites or for excluding certain files in dynamic sites. If the majority of your site is dynamically created then consider using the Robots < Meta >Tag. Creating your robots.txt file Example 1 Scenario If you wanted to make the .txt file applicable to all search engine spiders and make the entire site available for indexing. The robots.txt file would look like this: User-agent: * Disallow:
Explanation The use of the asterisk with the "User-agent" means this robots.txt file applies to all search engine spiders. By leaving the "Disallow" blank all parts of the site are suitable for indexing. Example 2 Scenario If you wanted to make the .txt file applicable to all search engine spiders and to stop the spiders from indexing the faq, cgi-bin the images directories and a specific page called faqs.html contained within the root directory, the robots.txt file would look like this: User-agent: * Disallow: /faq/ Disallow: /cgi-bin/ Disallow: /images/ Disallow: /faqs.html
Explanation The use of the asterisk with the "User-agent" means this robots.txt file applies to all search engine spiders. Preventing access to the directories is achieved by naming them, and the specific page is referenced directly. The named files & directories will now not be indexed by any search engine spiders.
Example 3 Scenario If you wanted to make the .txt file applicable to the Google spider, googlebot and stop it from indexing the faq, cgi-bin, images directories and a specific html page called faqs.html contained within the root directory, the robots.txt file would look like this: User-agent: googlebot Disallow: /faq/ Disallow: /cgi-bin/ Disallow: /images/ Disallow: /faqs.html
Explanation By naming the particular search spider in the "User-agent" you prevent it from indexing the content you specify. Preventing access to the directories is achieved by simply naming them, and the specific page is referenced directly. The named files & directories will not be indexed by Google. That's all there is to it! As mentioned earlier the robots.txt file can be difficult to implement in the case of dynamic sites and in this case it's probably necessary to use a combination of the robots.txt and the robots <meta> tag.
The Robots < Meta > Tag This alternative way of telling the search engines what to do with site content appears in the <head> section of a web page. A simple example would be as follows; <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow"> In this example we are telling all search engines not to index the page or to follow any of the links contained within the page. In this second example I don't want Google to cache the page, because the site contains time sensitive information. This can be achieved simply by adding the "noarchive" directive. <meta name="robots" content="noindex, nofollow, noarchive"> What could be simpler! Although there are other ways of preventing duplicate content from appearing in the Search Engines this is the simplest to implement and all web sites should operate either a robots.txt file and or a Robot <meta> tag combination.
