How Content Can Really Increase Your Sales

Search engines don't buy products and services. People do.

To sell your products and services online, you need targeted traffic. Search engines will send you targeted traffic, and a lot of it, if you take certain steps.

The first step in your search engine marketing campaign isn't search engine optimization. Your first step is to understand the internet and how to effectively use it to promote your products and services.

The internet is a content driven medium. Searchers are looking for information. They don't want to be sold to. They want value. You can provide this value through the content you write for your web site, as well as content you write for your promotions.

Therefore, you need to develop a complete, content management strategy. Your content management strategy needs to be customer focused, content driven, and optimized for the search engines.

Your content management strategy should consider on page and off page optimization factors. On page factors include optimizing your page for keywords relevant to your page, titles, and descriptions. Off page factors include link exchanges and backlinks.

Once you've chosen the topic for your site, you need to develop your web site. Decide what content you will write. Your content should include articles, press releases, and product reviews. You can also create free ebooks, reports, and white papers provided the information you include will be useful to your site visitor.

Before developing your content, you need to do your research. Find out what your readers are searching for. There are plenty of free tools and software on the internet to help you accomplish this task. Simply search for a keyword phrase like "keyword suggestion tools".

When you're ready to write your content, choose two to three keywords and/or keyword phrases in the text for your page. Write your content and then optimize your page for these keywords. You can use free software like Web CEO.

Although on page optimization will help you if you don't have a lot of competition for your keyword phrases, it is not enough if you are targeting high competition words. To raise your rankings, you will need to link to high traffic sites with high page rank. Building backlinks from other web sites will also help you raise your rankings.

Do a search in your favorite search engine to find sites you can link to. Study these sites. Check to see what keywords they use to optimize their pages. Find out if they exchange links and request a link exchange.

The key to success in search engine marketing is to do your homework BEFORE you create your web site. The bottom line is that no matter how many links you have pointing back to your site, or how well you optimize your page for the search engines, you won't rank high for keywords that are too competitive.

If you still insist on building a web site on a highly competitive topic, then I would recommend you use other techniques to promote your site. Article writing, forum posting, press releases, pay per click ads, and offline classifieds.

The bottom line is you won't succeed in any business you aren't passionate about. Choose a topic you like that has a market and then build a content rich search engine friendly market. Get your name out there and keep branding yourself. You will succeed.

Content is King: Some of the Specifics

It's axiomatic on the Internet: Content is King. Search engines love the stuff. People who visit your site are there because they want it. And, if you want to make money with a web site, a good way to get people there for free is to generate article content for someone else.

But, as usual, the devil's in the details. It's all well and good to say 'content is king', but that fact is no good unless you know the specifics. So here are a few tips to help you get the best from your written content.

  • Keep your articles focused: Write about a single facet of your given niche. Otherwise, you'll get a rambling, disordered mess.
  • Practice: Articles take practice. You'll need to write with some regularity in order to get to the point where you write well.
  • Blog: Become a blogger, and host this weblog on your own site. There are places to get free weblog accounts, but most of them have non-commercial use stipulations. If you break that stipulation and the host finds out, your weblog will evaporate without notice. I use WordPress, which takes a bit of learning and requires more maintenance, but is an excellent program and free.
  • Organize your content intelligently: This has to do with web site organization, but it can be summed up as 'if no one can find your content, they won't be happy with you'. Organize your site so that navigation is all but idiot-proof, and you'll keep your visitors happy.
  • Use Keywords: Find keywords that are actually searched and use them in your articles. You want the ones that make sense so you can work them into the title and body. Just remember the order of operations on this. You are not a slave to your keywords; they are tools for you. You can find phrases that are actually used on the Internet with the Overture keyword tool, or buy a commercial tool for your own use. The Overture tool is free, but the purchased varieties are more thorough.
  • Use META tags: These are ways to tell the search engines what your page is about and people using them about your article at a glance. These make your content more search-engine friendly, which is good for you. Sites with high page ranks get a lot of search engine traffic, but not if the person who's reading the search results can't determine what you're offering.
  • Tip lists are popular: You're reading a tip list right now. It's an easy way to make an article without too much writing effort. Your readers get good information quickly, and you get content easily.

To get content fast, you can use free content from a free article site. If you do that, you'll get an article without a lot of effort. The down side of this is that you must post the author's ad (better known as a resource box) with the article on your site as consideration for the article's use, and you can't claim it as your own. These types of articles are good for rounding out content, along with RSS feeds, but it doesn't pay not to write at least some of your own.

Keep these tips in mind, and it can help you make your content more of a king for you.

Niche Websites - Content, What Content?

What's In A Niche? When talking of niche web sites, the answer to that question is, in my humble opinion, not very much at all in most cases. Certainly much less than should be in a niche. Is it just me - are my expectations too high? I don't think so because I have seen some good niche web sites as well as many horrors. A real niche web site that has been built with care and passion is a thing of beauty (or, at the very least, interest) and is usually a treasure trove for visitors who share a love of the niche subject.

What I am complaining about are the so-called niche web sites people are throwing together for the sole purpose of collecting advertising revenue. These sites have little (if anything) in the way of content. The colourful pictures and plentiful advertisements do not make up for this lack. Advertising is fine, in fact it's usually essential if you want to stay in business. What makes me see red is clicking on misleading advertisements and landing on web site after cloned web site only to be confronted with a few sentences of poorly written text and dozens of gibbering advertisements. To test the integrity of a niche site, look at what would be left if you removed all the pay per click advertisements.

It is unfortunate for people who are surfing for information that the Internet is being overrun by the awful flimsy looking template produced web sites that are being churned out at a crazy rate. If you spend any time on the Internet, you will know the type of thing I mean. These web sites consist of a couple of pages with nice enough looking header graphics (that's the pictures at the top, if you are not "in the trade" so to speak), and clumps of advertisements placed so that they are the first thing you see. If you manage to get past the advertisements, you might find a few articles which have been copied from other web sites just for the sake of having something on the pages to lend them some credibility. These web sites don't exist to provide information or services or to promote anything. Their sole purpose is to carry advertising that will earn the owner money in return for just about zero work on his part.

How much time and effort goes into creating one of these monstrosities? Practically none: in most cases it is all done by a software package. The pseudo webmaster doesn't ever need to worry about actual webpage design or building. All these charlatans need to do is decide upon their niche topic, toss a bunch of keywords into the mix and the software will do the rest. These people can create their pseudo niche web sites on any subject anyone in the world might think of. It's easy because they don't need to know anything about the subject themselves. Whether it is dog training, bridal dresses, funerals or haemorrhoids, an online search tool will provide a list of keywords and the software will do the rest. Nobody cares that the laughing man clutching a fistful of cash or the sports car pictured in the heading has no relevance to the content and would be frankly inappropriate if you were looking for a funeral director or medication for a painful medical condition. The webmaster has no intention of offering you anything of value. In fact, it is in his interests if you take an immediate dislike to his web page because that makes you more likely to click away from it via one of his advertising links and that's how he makes his money.

After a couple of days of trying to do some semi-serious research on the Internet, I feel like unplugging my pc and dusting off my library tickets. Ok - so you can't judge a book by its cover but the cover doesn't usually set out to deliberately mislead you as to the contents (quite the opposite in fact). When I type a query into a search engine, I want the results to lead me to web sites containing the answer to that query. If I am searching for information about a particular subject, I don't appreciate being directed to web sites that consist of a few keyword loaded sentences walled in by blocks of advertisements for other similar web sites.

Roll on the day when someone invents a search engine that can distinguish between a real niche web site and an advertising vehicle built from a cheap kit. Maybe we can get back to the time when searching the Internet was faster than catching a bus to the library and thumbing through books.

Making a Content Site

Basic Steps

  • Find a Topic
  • Research
  • Domain
  • Content
  • Media
  • Site Design
  • Optimization
  • Advertising
  • Ad Placement
  • News Feeds
Find a Topic. Think of what you like, or enjoy. If you have a passion for something you will find it easier to create the site, and will already have an advantage when moving onto writing the content, or advertising the site. You could go the alternative route and find a topic with really high paying keywords, but these markets are usually highly saturated.

Research. Find out how many people actually want information related to your topic. It’s pointless to make a content site on something that:

a)doesn’t exist

b)no one has heard of

Don’t focus on the aspect that gets too many searches though, unless you believe you can get a good ranking still. Focus on mid-range search terms, for highly specific key phrases.

Note! Use variations of your keywords, some people use the term Soccer, whilst others use Football. For a good tool to check out how many people are search for what, click here.

Don’t forget to check out your competition, see what they offer, and decide whether you can offer visitors more, or better content. If your site isn’t an improvement, why would they visit?

Domain. Looking at what people are searching for and try to include those keywords/phrases in your domain, don’t go overboard with something like golfbagsballsclubsshoespants.com – 2 or 3 words is usually a good length for a domain.

Content. The most laboring part of the content site process – the content. If you want the biggest profit you’ll spend some time writing the articles yourself – remember clean, concise punctuation and grammar and no 1337 speak. If you: are lazy, have extra money, can’t write well, then find an article writing company, you can usually get great articles for $15-$20 per article.

Media. I always like to add a media page to my content sites. Just a page with photos, drawings, diagrams, videos, or even downloads. You may not need one of these, but it’s just something I like to do. It could make the users experience at your site more enjoyable also.

Site Design. You don’t need to be a pro designer to make something that looks decent. Pick up a copy of Dreamweaver, use Frontpage, or go back to basics with good old Notepad. Make a basic, quick loading design that is still appealing to visitors. If you can’t be bothered then just Google for ‘free web templates’ and you’ll get thousands upon thousands of listings. After you have the design integrate all the content etc into it. I usually aim for 5 good quality pages, but that depends on your topic/laziness.

Optimization. Time to get your site optimized for search engines. Here are just a few basic things you can do to help:

  • Title Tags: Unique & Relevant Title tags for each page.
  • Meta Tags: Unique & Relevant Meta tags for each page.
  • Page Names: Use filenames such as buy_golf_clubs.html instead of bgc.html
  • H1 Tags: Use h1 tags on each of your pages headings, and then h2on subheadings etc.
Advertising. Find forums, directories, top sites & web sites relevant to your niche.
  • Forum: Register, and try to be as helpful as possible, add the link to your site in your sig, and traffic will start. Try to get ‘respect’ in the community.
  • Directories: Submit to as many relevant directories as possible, to increase the number of back links to your site.
  • Top Sites: Not as common these days, but topsite lists are a decent source of traffic/page rank.
  • Websites: E-Mail owners of relevant web sites and request a link exchange.
Ad Placement. When you start to receive traffic you can monetize your site. Sign up for a program such as Google Adsense and place your ads within, and above your content. Make the ads blend in with your content & links, and use the channels feature to decide which placements are working well or not.

News Feeds. An extra feature which is good to have is news feeds. Using RSS add some relevant news to your pages to keep your site contents fresh, and give your visitors a reason to come back.

Top Speaker Says: Enthusiasm Beats Content Nearly Every Time

I hold five earned degrees. I’ve taught at 40 universities, and I’m the best-selling author of 12 books and more than 700 articles.

Therefore, you can believe me when I tell you that content is important to the success of a speech, seminar, or lecture.

But it isn’t supreme.

Content is almost always trumped by one thing: ENTHUSIASM.

For instance, I went to hear the chamber orchestra earlier this year. The program commemorated the 250th year since the birth of Mozart, and a professor preceded the program with a lecture.

His performance, there’s no other suitable term for it, was special. He gestured dramatically, paced back and forth on the stage, and his voice was electrical.

Yet, I have it on good authority that he didn’t say anything especially new or important.

Still, his presentation was a big success, judging from the laughs and oohs and ahs it evoked.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise. One of my first speech teachers was part of Dale Carnegie’s initial cohort of instructors and he would hammer home one point:

“Audiences will forgive a speaker nearly anything if he’s enthusiastic, and if he isn’t they’ll forgive nearly nothing!”

So, take a look at those credentials I cited at the top of this article. They’re meaningless, if I don’t put my teacher’s insight to work!

Effective Content - If you have ever wondered by some companies make it to the top of search engines in their own category can be a puzzle at times. The competition for top placement is getting tougher and tougher in specific industries. You need effective quality content in order to have the edge over your existing competition. So many businesses think that a web site is going to be successful of the bat.

Content Writing Companies - Content is king for one reason: People surf for content. Each of the major search engines is only successful to the extent that it helps people find the web site content they are looking for. Whichever search engine helps people find that web site content the quickest becomes the most popular. The more popular the search engine is, the more money it makes from advertising.

Weblog Publishers - While there is a lot of debate about blogs replacing emails in the future, I would rather look at blogs in a different perspective. The purpose of all technology is to make life easier for the user. Blogging is an evolving technology which when harnessed by an individual could make it very easy for anyone to communicate effectively. It empowers the individual in ways hitherto not available so easily.

Content Article - Stop using gimmicks and META tags and sneaky tricks that "guarantee" traffic explosions and nuclear hazards. Stop stealing other people's content, either through XML, RSS, or whatever XHDHTML you might think of. Duplicate and junk content is OUT. Quality, timely, visitor-oriented content is IN. Big time! Read on to find out more.

Google News - Content is what Search Engine robots look for when they decide how high to rank a web site for certain keywords. Let's define what we mean by content. To a search engine, content includes words, sentences, and paragraphs that are FULL of the keywords that you want to be found for. Please understand that all graphics are totally ignored by the search engines.

Optimization Techniques - Blogging, the hottest trend in online publishing right now, is currently spreading like wildfire across the Internet. A cross between an online journal and a bulletin board, everyone from rock stars, politicians, business leaders and your average "Joe" or "Jane" can instantly become a center of influence online using blogs.

Reciprocal Linking - Reciprocal linking is one of the most popular and (probably) effective ways to increase your PageRank. And although I have questions whether or not your PageRank actually means anything, that's another article for another day. The idea is that the more sites on the web that point to your site, the more important your site must be.

Website Content - Blogs and blogging are sweeping the internet. They are all the rage as a hobby, writing exercise, and even a career for some. In fact, it is even becoming more common that bloggers are seeking a way to make money. Be it via advertising or affiliations, they each have their own way of pursuing that writing career by way of the weblog . There is another way, though.

News Feeds - Blogs and RSS feeds are a sure-fire way to get your web site off the dirt roads of cyberspace and onto the Internet superhighway! Think about it. Has your web traffic been slow and bumpy? Then maybe it's time to try a new route.
