How To Syndicate Your Content

Do you have regularly updating content that you would like to make available to other web sites? Perhaps a computer tip of the day, a daily recipe, or even a daily cartoon?

Do you want to give your web site more exposure, boost sales, enhance your search engine rankings, or grow your newsletter subscriber list?

A fast and easy way to accomplish all of these goals is by using content syndication. Content syndication is the simple process of making a block of content (which usually changes on a regular basis) available for other webmasters to use on their web sites.

Sound complicated? Well, it isn't!

There are several ways to syndicate your content, but the easiest way by far is to use a simple IFRAME (Inline Frame). Here is the HTML code for creating your own content syndication IFRAME:

<iframe src="http://www.yoursite.com/content.html" width="150" height="300" frameborder="1" scrolling="no"></iframe>
Content courtesy of http://www.yoursite.com.

To display your content on his/her web page, all the other webmaster has to do is copy and paste this code into his/her web page in the place where he/she wants your content to be displayed.

Instructions:

1 - Replace http://www.yoursite.com/content.html with the URL of the page on your web site that you wish to syndicate. Make sure this page contains only the content itself along with any related HTML code such as bolding, colors, etc. Do not include headers, footers, navigation, etc.

2 - The width and height attributes set the size of the IFRAME in pixels. In the example above, the content would fit in the left-hand navigation column of most web sites.

You can change these attributes to any size you wish, but keep in mind that the IFRAME must be large enough to accommodate your content. Also keep in mind that the smaller your syndicated content, the easier it will be to find webmasters who are willing to use it.

3 - The frameborder setting determines whether your content will be displayed inside a box. The default setting is yes (1). If you change this setting to 0, there will be no border, hence no box.

4 - Setting the scrolling attribute to "yes" will add scrollbars to the IFRAME. This is useful if you wish to syndicate a long article while keeping the IFRAME small.

5 - Change the URL in "Content courtesy of http://www.yoursite.com." to your web site's URL. This way visitors can click to visit your web site if they found your content useful.

I recommend making this line mandatory as a condition for using your content. It will generate targeted traffic to your web site and provide a valuable backlink for search engine ranking purposes.

6 - Important: Copy and paste the code above into NotePad, then into your HTML editor. This helps ensure proper formatting in your web page.

7 - Let other webmasters know you have content available for them to place on their web sites. You can place a link on your site that says: "Syndicate our content!" or "Like this content? Place it on your web site!"

You can also submit your content to the many "free content" web sites that are found on the web. Just do a Google search for "free content".

That's all there is to syndicating your content on other web sites! Have fun!

Mini Site or Content-based Web Site?

Are you in a dilemma whether to create a mini site or a content-based web site for your new product or service? The purpose of creating a web site should be to attract visitors and convert them to paying customers. Is a mini site with a few pages enough to do this or should you spend more time and create a content-based web site which contains many pages?

Let's look at some of the Pros and Cons:

Mini Sites

Pros

1. Easy to set up - you don't have to be a programmer these days to create a mini site. Web site templates or software allow most of the work to be done already. 2. Little time - you could create a mini site within one day if you have your entire content ready to go. 3. Laser focused on selling one product or service - a mini site can simply be one long sales page with an order button at the end. 4. No distractions - customers are distracted by other options on the web site. With no banners or links to other sites, the customer can be directed to purchase immediately. 5. Inexpensive to create - if you use a free hosting account (not recommended), you would just pay for registering a domain name. Paid hosting services for a mini site can be acquired for only $30/year.

Cons

1. Difficult for search engines to spider - a web site containing many relevant pages of content will tend to rank higher in the search engines than a one page mini site. 2. Lacks pages of content - mini sites often lack in-depth information about their product or service. 3. Difficult to increase link popularity - getting links from other web sites increases your link popularity. Webmasters form other sites want to link to a web site which contains valuable information that expands their visitors experience. 4. Less traffic - less pages means fewer chances for people to find your site in the search engines, thereby limiting the amount of traffic your web site receives.

Content-based web sites

Pros

1. Search engine friendly - creating a content-based page for every targeted keyword will enable visitors to enter from numerous points within your site. 2. Easy to acquire links from other sites - webmasters want to link to web sites that will expand their visitors experience by providing more information (ie articles) or simplify their tasks (ie software). 3. Become an authority on your product or service - adding pages of content related to your product, helps people to make an informative decision before purchasing. 4. Lots of traffic - creating lots of keyword focused pages and acquiring incoming and outgoing links to and from other sites generates lots of free traffic.

Cons

1. Too many options - customers can become indecisive if their are too many options to choose from. 2. Too many links to other web sites - this may take visitors away from your site and not return. Ideally you want to keep them at your site. 3. Can be expensive to build - content-based sites can cost thousands of dollars to develop if you take into account the cost of graphics and/or hiring someone to build it for you. 4. Takes a lot of time to develop the web site - building content-based pages takes time. It may take several years to create hundreds of content-based pages. 5. Attracts "tire kickers" - visitors want to look around to glean free information but may never buy.

Conclusion:

Before you decide on what type of web site to develop, first think of the purpose of your site. If you just need a sales page and want to drive targeted traffic to your site using paid advertising (ie paid per click search engines, ezine ads) then a mini site could be sufficient.

If you plan on becoming an authority on your product or service and want to attract lots of free search engine traffic, then a content-based web site will serve you better.

Alternatively, you may create a combination of the two ie begin with a mini site, leaving room to expand it to a larger content-based web site in the future.

How to Get Your Visitors to Create Content for Your Website

An ongoing challenge for webmasters today is to provide fresh content that gives visitors a reason to return to their site. Unless you have a full-time staff dedicated to creating regular content, the time involved can be crippling.

Wouldn't it be great if someone else would write timely, relevant content for you? Sure, but what are the odds of that happening? Well, many webmasters are already enjoying this phenomenon, and I'm happy to count myself among them.

Set it up. Whether your site has a catalog of products or a collection of articles, you can design your pages to allow visitors to post reviews of whatever is featured on the page. They can share their experiences with items they've bought or post comments on the information in your site. Don't confuse this powerful tool with a discussion forum. You create the topic of each page, and encourage visitors to post updates with the latest information in this area.

The more information you provide on your site, the better service you are providing to your visitors; but they aren't the only ones who benefit from including reviews. It's also a boon to you as a webmaster. Even if you never wrote another line of new copy, your pages will continue to grow with relevant content. Granted you still have to spend a little time reading the reviews and moderating what appears on your site, but the time required is much less than you would spend writing original content.

Why someone else will create content for you. While the advantages to the webmaster and reader may be obvious, you are probably wondering what incentives exist for the reviewer. A few lucky souls have enough free time to share their opinions online for the mere satisfaction of seeing their own words, but most will need something more tangible before they invest the time to write a useful review. The onus is on you, the webmaster, to create an appropriate incentive. The importance of link popularity in search engine rankings provides a powerful clue. At AffiliateScreen.com, I allow my visitors to post reviews of their experiences with online affiliate programs. At the bottom of their review, they have the option of including a link to another page that supports what they've written (or they can simply include their affiliate link for the program). AffiliateScreen.com gives them the additional credibility of their expertise appearing on a third-party site.

Look at this from the reviewer's perspective. Here's a unique opportunity to gain an external link pointing to the reviewer's web site, but this is far more valuable than a random reciprocal link. Search engines are determining link popularity by examining both the quantity and relevance of links. The page with their link is loaded with keywords related to the product or service, and the reviewer can include additional relevant keywords in their post. The reviewer actually has a hand in creating the page that will link to their site. This is extremely powerful! Can you begin to see how anyone looking to increase traffic to their site would jump at the opportunity to create content for your web site?

Now you may have some concerns that allowing anyone to add content and links to your site is inviting your competitors to steal your traffic. If your site has detailed reviews of products on your site, anyone who leaves your site to visit a competitor won't spend much time there before realizing that your site has useful, original content that they can't find anywhere else. If that doesn't put your mind at ease, though, there's nothing to stop you from including a disclaimer when someone submits a review. Explain in this disclaimer that direct references to your competitors will be removed to keep the reviews informative and to avoid marketing hype. You are the webmaster, after all.

You can draw even more traffic by allowing visitors to rate the usefulness of each review. Many reviewers will encourage people to visit your site so they can read and rate the review. More important than just being a gimmick to increase traffic, rating reviews allows you to sort them by quality and expose your average visitors to the best possible content first.

Promote it! Once you've got the code in place, it's important to publicize this new feature of your web site. If you have experience or know someone with experience writing press releases, you may be able to garner attention from news and niche media. Another highly effective form of publicity is to mention the new feature above the fold on the main page of your site.

If you have a newsletter, promote the review process in your next issue. In fact, as you begin to accumulate reviews, they can serve as great additional content for your newsletter. Simply include the best reviews in each issue. As with the reviews on your web site, you are providing valuable content for your audience, giving your reviewer great exposure, and saving time for yourself. It's a win-win-win situation.

Adding the Right Keywords to Your Website Content

You've made your web site, added a great title and keywords in the meta tags. That's it, right?

Not quite. There is another simple strategy to get more bang out of the content of your page - knowing what words people are using for their searches and then incorporating them into your web site.

Here's a handy tool that will be your guide to finding those words: http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Let's step through an example for a candle business: Type candle in the search box and the results return christmas candle, yankee candle, making candle, candle holder, and candle supply in addition to just the word candle.

How can a candle company business benefit from this knowledge? By working as many of these results into the site content as can be done reasonably.

For example, this business could post an article on their site and include links to their products. The content of the article could describe how candles are effective in *making* the *Christmas* season bright. Then launch into a *supply* list for items they will need for using candles to decorate the home for the holidays, and they type of *holder* to use for each candle.

See how easy that was to work these words into the web site? This internet marketing solution is effective and simple. Try to make it a fun game to see how many words you can work into your text.
