The Ten Cardinal Rules Of Blogging

It was easier when I was running EMJ, since I had built EMJ slowly over 25 years so people got to know me better as the company grew. At SYNNEX, I have a whole new group of people who wondered about who I was. Blogging was one way to bridge this gap.

I am a life long learner. Doing SYNNEX threw me into a huge and fast learning curve. Part of me wants to share and inspire people. Blogging was a natural way for me to do this.

From this experience I came up with Jim Estill's Ten Rules of Blogging:

1. Have a theme. This helps attract readers. It provides a framework around which to weblog . I chose Time Leadership as my theme. I have had a long interest in the use of time and published an audio book on time management. I am constantly looking for new time reducing ideas to add to my present material.

2. Blogging obligates you to do more blogging. It is just like writing a newspaper column. If you have a lot of people reading your weblog , they expect to see new material. I weblog about 5 or 6 days per week and occasionally skip a day, but not often. I now know the pressure writers on deadlines must feel.

3. Blogging is a two-way street. You must respond to the comments you will get. The larger the weblog following, the more comments you will get.

4. Blogging takes time. One of my time rules is - if I add something to my schedule that takes time; I need to delete something that takes the same amount of time. For me, it takes about 15 to 20 minutes per day and I write quickly and keep it brief.

5. Be legal. Of course this is obvious but I mean more than just being legal -- be careful of giving away information that could be considered to be business confidential. There have been cases where people have lost their job because the company does not like what has been said in the weblog .

6. Keep a file of weblog ideas. I keep an electronic file and a paper one. This material gives me something to say when sometimes I am not as inspired to weblog . It can also be something that prompts me on writing in my weblog . I know I often find myself thinking in terms of what might make good weblog material.

7. Provide links from your weblog . People who read blogs are used to being able to click on interesting topics and going right to the web page with the information. After all, this is the internet.

8. Only start blogging if you like to write. Even though I like to write, I do often find it to be a bit of a challenge.

9. Be authentic. I think the readers appreciate it. I think it would be hard to have a ghost writer do a weblog . It would be difficult to appear real.

10. Be patient. Don't expect 10,000 readers in the first month. Readership grows over time. I follow my stats, and I notice my weekend readership is about half my readership during the week.

And now that I have written this article - am I less mysterious?

Original Content and Blogging

There is a discussion on the web of importance of original content on your weblog pages vs. syndication (small excerpts from other site posts with link, there is also problem of reprinting material.)

I think to understand what is what here first we should divide niche blogging into two categories based on what particular weblog offer to visitors: 1.Opinions and thoughts on some Subject(s). 2. focusing on Products like cameras, cars, software etc. Here I assume that either subjects not invented or products not produced by blogger. (It is evident that problem of original content doesn't arise if blogger is himself producing products he talking about) Main assumption I make here is that you want to attract audience.

Now having these two major weblog sphere categories, let's apply our question of Original Content. Now, when we made such division, some evident things appear on a surface.

Syndication approach in filling content on a site which is focused on some problem or discussing some subject - is dead approach in terms of attracting big audience. There are few cases when I returned to a site from which I found a link to a interesting article, unless there are a lot of original and interesting material.

Since the blogger did not invent the subject but just focusing on it, I expect him to cover subject with his original thoughts and material. If the weblog is just a container of excerpts of other authors articles with links then this weblog looks like incomplete collection of links on subject. And I better google for subject next time.

On the other hand, when the subject is a product (cameras, phones, gadgets etc.) then syndication approach may work to some extent. You call your site "Bla-Bla-review weblog ", you put some information on a product (I don't think that product manufacturer will sue blogger for reprinting specifications of a product?) and make short excerpt with a link to product review article (that is what one Australian professional blogger does for living from his home). Add search engines love of blogs, some time (do not forget to post regularly new products information), mix content with ads and you may at least cover your hosting expenses.

With this kind of weblog you get a lot of visitors going to buy a product and searching the net for reviews and opinions on this product. You will not get a lot of coming back visitors, but a lot of visits through search engines.

Sure, I simplified the question and there are blogs focused on interests and alike and many just don't care. But basically, when your primary goal is to attract visitors then you should consider this issue. These were just my thoughts.

Spam Blogs - Most people today want to create a consistent monthly income which requires little or no effort. Up until now the best method of achieving a consistent monthly income has been through mlm's or network marketing programs. These methods seem to have fallen out of favor recently because of the difficulty in recruiting and maintaining downlines.

Blogging Activities - Back in the day, the only things you could really put on your web site were hand-coded pages, images, and maybe the occasional file download. Today, however, huge amounts of software exist that can make your web site work however you want it to - and, thanks to the efforts of volunteers, almost all of them are available for free.

Mobile Blogging - You have your own domain name and web hosting but you decide to host your blog elsewhere. Why? Useful Content - Good, quality content can be summed up as offering useful information that is current and offers new or interesting points of view. There are several ways to accomplish this and writing articles is an excellent way of adding content but if you're not a writer, and believe me most people are not, there are several ways to add content that is not found everywhere, yet will offer a new, fresh perspective.

Content Needs - In this day and age of online marketing, content has been heralded as king, and for good reasons. People flock to sites not because of the flashy graphics nor the astounding features nor the witty domain name of the said pages, but because of the information contained therein that would enlighten them with their queries of the moment.

Article Google Sitemaps - Google has had a feature out for some time which allows webmasters to create a sitemap file to help Google's crawlers find and index content. It sounds like a great idea. After all, it's much easier to feed the crawler the content then hope it finds it on it's own.

Web Content Management - The phrase used in the title, "web content management system fr window" is a real-life example of a common search engine typo. In fact, within that phrase, the "o" and the "s" are missed so often that search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN have recorded the phrase "web content management system fr window" as searched about 481 times on a monthly average.
